Matthew (Matt) Schafer is a Michigan attorney focused on technology agreements. He also brings more than 20 years of experience working with enterprise technology, so he understands both the technology behind an agreement and the business issues that come with it.
Before opening his practice, Matt worked at EDS as a Contracts Negotiator supporting General Motors’ IT Purchasing organization and later held a series of technology, contracts, and sourcing roles with Ford Motor Company. His experience includes agreements involving hardware, software, SaaS, telecommunications, infrastructure, IT services, professional services, and maintenance and support.
Over the years, Matt has worked with technology and telecommunications providers including AT&T, Verizon, HCL, Cisco, IBM, Dassault Systèmes, Siemens, Epitec, and Mandiant. His technology experience also includes Cisco voice and communications systems, telecommunications modernization, network and infrastructure operations, technology migrations and cutovers, and working with suppliers on technology implementations.
That experience is useful when reviewing a technology agreement because the contract is only part of the picture. The terms need to make sense for the technology being provided, the services being delivered, and the business relationship behind them.
Today, Matt helps businesses with technology provider selection, contract review, software and SaaS agreements, technology services, contract modifications, and renewals. His goal is simple: help clients understand what they are agreeing to and make practical decisions before they commit.
Matt is an active member of the State Bar of Michigan. Outside the office, he serves as Executive Director for the Parish Planning Committee at Trinity Lutheran Church in Wyandotte. When not spending time with his family, he enjoys working on cars and restoring vintage 1970s and 1980s audio equipment.
